The people had been part of someones empire for literally thousands of years. Immediately prior to the Seljuk conquest of much of what is now Turkey in 1071,the area was inhabited by Byzantines; it provided most of the recruits for the Byzantine army under the Thema system, and had done for over 400 years. As ownership of the land and service in the army under the Thema system were hereditary, the people living in the area were clearly Byzantines - Eastern Roman citizens. After the Seljuk conquest, the inhabitants became their subjects, until the Sultanate of Rum was overrun by the Ottoman Turks in 1281.
