What is the general cost of living in Turkey for a family of 2 parents and 2 kids. I would need info on rent, food, schooling, travel, buying car? Accomodation not really in touristy place but in decent turkish locality. We are interested in living in turkey like a turkish and not as a foreigner.

Hi; Cars are very expensive in Turkey compare to europe 2 to 3 times expensiver due to tax. Also fuel is expensiver in Turkey compare to U.K. and Europe. Rent depends if you go to big city like istanbul, izmir, ankara etc.. it would be about minimum 600-700 tl a month. If you go little villages rent would go down half price. Schools are free unless you want your kids to go private schools which are costly depending to school. In big cities many people use public transports due to massive parking problems and quicker to use public transports to get a to b. Food is cheap if you cook in the house thats how most Turkish families are living. Anymore questions feel free

For the question : there are many foreigners who stay in this country and work here. At least I know an American and an Irish =) So you can ask these people, they should have a community, i think. For the above answer : why do you think many British, German, Russian etc. people stay in Turkey permanently ? They like the pain ?

In a decent city, for a decent place, you would have to pay at least 600 liras/month for housing expenses (inc. rent, bills etc...) Food is quite cheap so as long as you don't eat out often, it won't be so tough. However, travelling and buying a car are quite costly because of the taxes applied (for the price I paid for my car, you can buy 5 of them in UK - and this is not exaggeration). Public schools are free (they may have a citizenship requirement though), but private schools (which cost up to 10 000 liras/year or more) are always better in quality, naturally. And public universities demand a relatively low participation fee (from 200 liras to 1500 liras let's say, depending on the field of study, the time of the courses etc...) So in brief, if you get your paycheck from a European country, not from Turkey, everything will be cheap for you (except for the cars and flight tickets).

I am an American living in Turkey, and I can say that is actually quite expensive here overall in many areas. But, as other people said, it all depends on where you live. Of course, the rural areas are much cheaper than the cities, but I doubt that you are planning to move there. Most foreign people select Istanbul, Izmir or Ankara. All of these cities have relatively expensive rent prices. If you want an apartment similar to what is "average" in Europe of the US, expect to pay at least 1,200 YTL per month. If you are willing to live in what is "average for Turkey" I guess it is possible to pay the 600 YTL that people are mentioning, but you won't live in a good neighborhood. Going out to restaurants, and especially drinking alcohol is expensive. Everything that is not a "necessity of life" in fact is expensive. (Gym memberships, entertainment, travel/hotels, etc.). It really depends on your lifestlye, but if you want to live the life normal in the US or Europe, you will probably pay MORE than what you do there. On the other hand, if you want to just live a simple life only staying at home all the time and buying everything from local street markets, you can probably even save money here. Hope that helps
