Is it safe living in Turkey

Is it safe living in Turkey?
I am planning to study medicine in Ankara but I heard that the crime rate is high (in fact a girl has recently been beheaded) the way people live is very different than mine (men sexually harass women etc.) and many other bad things about Turkey. Do you guys think (or know if) it is safe living in Turkey? PS: No fence guys. I do not mean to insult anybody! and by the way what percentage of women wear higaps(tourbans)?

Yes it is it practically safe living anywhere as long as you don't get in any trouble.

No fence guys? You want to study medicine but can't spell - yet know what offense is? Yeah man Turkey will be very dangerous for you.

Don't come. Stay uninformed forever, that is the best thing for you.

My Chiropractor's son was studying there last year...he was supposed to stay the whole year, he came home at semester...he hated it. I've never heard of a higap...a hijab is a cloak or kaftan-like garment that covers the clothing...women don't ordinarily wear turbans. In fact, I don't think ANYONE wears a turban any more. As a woman, I wouldn't go. Not to live. I don't think I could assimilate to their lifestyle, but then, I haven't done a whole lot of research on it...I just know I couldn't survive in a largely Muslim population.

I'm not sure if you have lived in Turkey for a long period of time but I have been up there for a holiday which turned into a very extended holiday. The culture is amazing the people are amazing, it is a very modern country they know how to have more fun there than in westernized countries. I have not seen one person who wears the tourban and there aren't alot of covered woman but this is personal preference weather they want to cover or not it shouldn't affect you studies. As for the crime rate this is like all countries there are good and bad everywhere but if you don't get involved with bad then you will be safe!

The answer to your question depends on what you consider as safe and where you are from. You shouldn't expect the safeness of Scandinavia in Turkey. However i would say Turkey is pretty safe to live. You shouldn't be intimidated by the news on media or things that you have overheard. Ankara is the capital of Turkey and is quite a safe city, as long as you don't go to certain places, by this i mean just you as long as you use your common sense you will be very safe. All the cities in the world have parts that are dangers. Right now i live in Chicago for example and parts of it would be much more dangerous than Ankara or Istanbul. Ankara is a modern city where you would be able to find many bars, cafes and parks to go feel safe. People, especially the people in the university that you will be attending to would definitely guide you much better in details with Turkish hospitability. I think you shouldn't worry about safety about living in Turkey. The problems with religion and customs mostly exist in rural areas and it is mostly among locals, the tourists are rarely targeted with any offence regarding these elements. If you are able to emerge into a new culture, enjoy differences and handle the language barrier(although you will find English speakers easily in the university), i would definitely recommend you taking the chance to live in Turkey. Higabs are not enforced by the government in Turkey, as you probably already know, it is secular country. Percentage of higaps would vary in different cities and even neighboorhoods. In Ankara you will rarely encounter people wearing higabs/tourban, if you go to south east region the number will increase. If you are a woman, it is very unlikely(never in Ankara) that you would be asked to wear higap/tourban unless you are visiting a mosque. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any further doubts or questions relating the issue.

You can find pictures from a medical school in Ankara here, see how you like it: http://www.tmresimler.com/cat229.htm But you manage to use all of the racist views expressed in Western racist circles in just one question. I can't help but get the feeling that your main aim is to insult, not ask. Still, thinking about other people that may read your uncouth question, I will be polite.

It's like any other country... if you go to dangerous parts of town then it is dangerous... if you don't then it is not...
