living in istanbul is difficult for a Turkish person because it is very big and it has its own problems and rules so You should add your cultural and language difference too but there is another fact that you will love this city :)

There's no hate against Christians ,instead they're so welcoming..if you will be living in certain classy places as we do ,then you'll be fine.Otherwise the problems you'll face is also the problems that we face.. Just a hint ; try to forget the over-scheduled in-order lifestyle of the US..be spontanous and enjoy..i met lots of american students in Istanbul ,they loved it there and just said that everything happens so quicklly ,people doesn't plan their nights one week in advance as in the US...and try to have some Turkish friends there ,they'll definetelly help you with everything .Use craigslist for possible arrangements ,like accomodation and stuff... enjoy and good luck..

If you are not from rural areas of America then you can do it. Istanbul is another big city in the world.

I lived in Ankara for 5 months and went to istbul a few times. Turkey let alone istumbul has many problems do be aware while your there. I saw lots of protests and many beggers. Plus there are a log of stray cats. If you end up going to turkey go to Konya for a day or two. Hope this helps!!!

I am 27 years old and lived in istanbul at my entire life, istanbul has some important musts to accept. for example, girls in my city do not often wear mini skirts or fancy dress too often, that doesnt mean that if you wear them you will get harresed by men, but you will see lots of eyes watching you. I could help you better if you gave some clue on where you will rent an apartment or stay in a hotel in istanbul. there are 12-15 million people living in istanbul so there are lots of places and lots of cultures. I can give you the safe places to visit day and night like, bagdat street(in anatolian side, get on a public taxi(in turkish pronounciation "dollmush" from kadikoy and say you will go to caddebostan), nişantaşı (in european side, beşiktaş district) Until you have an idea about istanbul, for example 2 weeks, dont stay late in taksim, istiklal street. there is a nice district in weekdays, in weekends toooo crowded. Stay away from Aksaray(where night clubs and adult entertainment is located in İstanbul), day and night. Stay away from Tarlabaşı(Tharlabashı) day and night (It is near Taksim Square) there is a small entry about this area in wikipedia The most taxi charge you could pay, for example from Sabiha Gokcen airport to Yeşilköy Airport, would cost you about 80-90 TL, app. 60USD and there are no night tariffs in istanbul now, for taxis. Average taxi charge wouldnt exceed 10-20 TL. In summary, Istanbul is a BIG city, you should accept the facts and you will have a nice stay in Istanbul. (I havent had a serious trouble in my entire life in istanbul)
